I expected the conversation to be engaging and interesting, but it was so much more! It was such an inspiring moment to hear these three teachers explain how going to ISTE’s conference has actually changed the type of teachers they are! What a powerful statement!

All three mentioned that going to the ISTE conference helped them realize three essential points:

They are not alone. They all arrived at ISTE with different levels of technical knowledge, but talking and sharing at the conference helped them realize that though everyone starts as a beginner, everyone can move forward in embedding technology thoughtfully.

There is a worldwide shared vision for educational technology. All three teachers mentioned that ISTE helped them realize that the rest of the world is engaging in and using technology to develop student skills and concepts at a level they hadn’t realized. Seeing those examples helped them realize what is possible for our school.

Personal learning is necessary. Two of the three teachers hadn’t used Twitter before the conference, but through the discussions and examples provided (and a little from me pointing out some of my favorite #edtech “rock stars”), they realized how powerful a Personal Learning Network could be. After the conference, all three teachers became active members of the #edtech and #edchat communities on Twitter. They all mentioned that ISTE inspired them to continue reading and engaging in learning as part of their professional development efforts.

Inspiration

Maca, a Grade 3 homeroom teacher said, ”After the conference I realized that I needed to learn more and read more…. I didn’t realize that the learning went way over the walls of the school.” She added, ”ISTE gave me motivation to do more in my classroom.”

Tania, a technology integration specialist in an elementary school, said, ”It helped me build up my vision of what I wanted [for ed tech] in our school…. Without ISTE, I don’t think I would have seen this vision so clearly…. You get to see the big picture.” She added, “Meeting other people who ‘get’ what we do makes me feel like I’m not alone… like I belong to this global community of ‘crazy’ technology people! Whenever I have a problem I know there is someone out there who can help me solve it.”

Cristina, a middle school English teacher said, ”Before I thought technology was something social but not for learning, but after ISTE I realized that everything that is out there on the web can be used as an educational tool.” She added that sharing is essential. ”Everyone at ISTE was so open to share and help others learn, and now I do that here.”

Recommendations

From the conversation, they came to a clear consensus on three important recommendations for our #newbies before they go to the conference:

Download Evernote: It is essential to record sessions to listen to them later

Download ISTE app: You need to make sure you have a plan b, plan c, and plan d for each day!

Join Twitter: have an account so you can follow others and #iste13

It was a great conversation that ended with all three of the past attendees saying, “I’m jealous! Is there a way that we can go this year, too?” Powerful professional development for sure!

SIGML (mobile learning) is holding a charity drive, called Mobile Share, to collect old tablets, handheld devices, e-readers, iPod touches and laptops as well as any accessories that go with them.

All devices will go to the Kramden Institute to be refurbished and donated to educational nonprofits and schools, with the goal of getting technology into the hands of students who need it.

Conference attendees who don’t want to lug their old device to San Antonio or ISTE members who can’t make it to the conference this year can ship their electronics, marked “Mobile Share,” directly to the Kramden Institute. (See the website for details.)

“We are delighted that Kramden is willing to work with us for this step in preparing the mobile devices for the hands of children!” said Susan Wells, SIGML president. “We know this project will have a tremendous impact on equitable access to mobile learning for students across the country.”

Tax-exempt receipts will be available on the ISTE 2013 Conference Ning.

If you are a teacher or technology coach with strong opinions about standards—their strengths, how they can help transform education, their limitations, or burdens they can place on teachers—ISTE wants to know what you think, whether it is positive, negative or somewhere in between. It’s not necessary to be a standards expert or have any special experience.

ISTE will host the standards focus group on Monday, June 24, 11 a.m.–12 noon at the San Antonio Convention Center during ISTE 2013. If you are interested in participating and available at that time, please fill out a short survey by Thursday, June 20. ISTE will select participants by Friday, June 21, and follow up by email with information about the session in the convention center.

Each participant who completes the survey will receive a free copy of ISTE’s NETS for Students Curriculum Planning Tool.

One of the best things about going to ISTE’s Annual Conference and Exposition is all the new connections you can make with like-minded educators from around the world. To enter the contest, just snap a photo, tag it with #ISTEgram13, and share it with your friends on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook. There’s no time to waste—ISTE is already giving away weekly prizes, including Amazon and Starbucks gift cards, ISTE 2013 keynote books, and some awesome ISTE swag, for the best and most popular photos. Each of the top three photos will snag a grand prize of an iPad case, a messenger bag or an iPod shuffle.

Here’s a tip: You can increase your chances of winning by submitting lots of photos (there’s no limit), sharing them far and wide, and using popular hashtags such as #ISTE13 to maximize exposure.

ISTE 2013 will feature a unique event and strand aimed at superintendents, principals, CTOs, technology coordinators and other leaders to address emerging leadership topics. Epic Leadership: Beyond the Hype of Gamification is the first in this series and kicks off Sunday, June 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon during the conference.

Gamification has been a recent trend in education that’s characterized by two very different perspectives. Some see engagement, concentration and collaboration, while others see isolation, social dysfunction and addiction. This interactive, three-hour session will dispel the myths surrounding gaming, draw clear connections between games and learning, and give attendees practical examples of this pedagogical approach happening right now in schools all over the world. A combination of experiential learning, presentations from gaming experts and a Q&A by ISTE 2013 opening keynoter Jane McGonigal, this session will explore gamification from a leadership perspective and demonstrate how games can help us create rich, dynamic and challenging learning environments. Enter the code lead when registering on the Special Events page. This session is sponsored by AutoDesk.

The other day, I skyped into an afterschool meeting to do a little PD on using twitter. I looked out at those poor tired faces, sitting in uncomfortable chairs, crammed into the hot library just waiting for the day to end. Amidst the crowd though, were 3 or 4 teachers, on the edge of their seat, just soaking up the knowledge and reeling with the possibilities. ISTE is one of those conferences were there are just thousands of those edge-sitters.

My first ISTE experience was in San Antonio – so I will be completing the circuit. (I wonder if I will get some kind of badge?). I can remember stepping into the exhibits hall and thinking I was in Disney World, hundreds of vendors ready to give you a tutorial on the latest and the greatest. Like a race car driver, I unabashedly covered myself in stickers, t shirts and SWAG for the chance at gaining some new materials in my classroom.

Truth is, the folks at ISTE have provided a framework, a venue, and a great program, but the people that attend are a clever sort. They have seized the opportunity of gathering face to face and launched the experience into overdrive. Social media people are, well, social. There are opportunities for collaboration in every nook and crannie in the building – actually it goes beyond the building, into the bars and restaurants, hotel lobbies and airport lounges (Make sure you get a VIP pass to the Karaoke Party — weather you sing or not, it is a night of ridiculous good fun).

Sound good, but you just can’t make it? The leaders of social media have made it so that you can listen in, watch and learn without leaving your couch. They will be strapping headcams on, writing blogs, tweeting insights.

Are you going? Look for me, I’ll be wearing one of the ISTE volunteer shirts, trying to give back!
Or
I’ll be at the Poster Session “STEAM After School Programs-with Hands-on Experiences with 6th to 8th Grade Students” from 10-12 on Tuesday.
Or
I’ll be the one sitting at the edge of my seat!

Online ISTE conference registration is open until June 18 for the world’s premier education technology event slated for June 23-26 in San Antonio.

“Access to meaningful technology for all learners is at the core of ISTE’s mission, so there’s tremendous synergy between our goals and Microsoft’s generous investment in our 2013 conference attendees,” said Brian Lewis, ISTE CEO. “This bold move is illustrative of Microsoft’s commitment to the effective use of technology in education. It’ll be fantastic to watch attendees take their conference learning experience to the next level through the power of their new Surfaces and to hear about the ways they use them with their students.”

Supported by hands-on workshops and sessions in the Microsoft Learning Lounge at ISTE 2013, the Windows in the Classroom Surface Experience Project provides an opportunity for educators to experience how a Windows 8 touch device makes learning come to life.

“Educators using Surface RT have the best of both worlds: the wonderful experience of a tablet combined with a no-compromise experience of a full-functioning laptop that includes Office and allows for creation and collaboration, and not just consumption,” said Margo Day, Vice President, U.S. Education, Microsoft. “Educators already using Windows 8 tell us they are able to get grading and planning done more quickly because they can multi-task and they can imagine new and personalized learning experiences for their students.”

To participate in the Windows in the Classroom Surface Experience Project, registered ISTE 2013 attendees may go to http://WICExperience.itnint.com to learn more on how to qualify. Educators must have a school official and/or ethics officer sign a gift acknowledgement letter provided by Microsoft and bring it to the ISTE conference in order to receive a free Surface RT device for their school.

The world’s premier education technology event, ISTE 2013’s agenda is headlined by three provocative speakers, Jane McGonigal, Steven Johnson and Adam Bellow, and features nearly 700 sessions and interactive learning environments. The ISTE Expo will include more than 500 exhibits from ed-tech companies around the globe.

For more information including terms and conditions, go to http://WICExperience.itnint.com

The ISTE Convention in San Antonio is less than two weeks away, and I can’t wait…for many reasons. My colleague, Lisa Parisi, and I are absolutely thrilled to have won the first place ISTE SIGOL award for online learning. Attending the ISTE conference in San Antonio to receive that award is such an honor, so that alone would be plenty, but the networking and collaborative learning available is something so alive and powerful that that would also be way more than enough…yet there is still one more thing.

Lisa, an author and my award winning project partner, and I met a few years ago in a Flat Classroom project. It was my maiden global collaboration, and we have worked closely together since. We’ve been through trenches, over mountains, in valleys…we’ve walked through deserts and jungles, and crossed sometimes placid, sometimes rough seas during that time…braving district mandates, policy and procedure, and technical difficulties of all shapes and sizes. We have learned countless programs, developed curriculum specific projects, dealt with student ‘learning opportunities’, parent issues, Hurricane Sandy, the very edge of a teacher strike, disappointing and triumphant circumstances of all kinds…together.

We have met on Blackboard/Elluminate, Skype, Google Hangout, and on the phone at all hours and on every day of the week…with colleagues in Prague, Dubai, China, Costa Rica, Canada, and so many places I can’t recall them all. We have joined our students together to collaborate on Skype, Edmodo, Kidblog, Google Hangout, Voicethread, and countless other platforms, many in beta form. We have been true pioneers stopping at nothing, and living true collaboration on every single level…and I have never actually stood in the same room with her.

The last thing that I am looking so forward to is this: looking into Lisa’s eyes without a screen between us, along with the countless other educators that I have been truly blessed to have learned from and worked with in the past several years. The world we are privileged to work in right now is absolutely stunning in its ability to provide limitless opportunities to stretch, grow, give and receive. And there is not one other industry filled with as much professional generosity as the field of education. All we have to do is be open and make the effort. It’s all there.

For conference newcomers like me, it has been so easy to navigate the planning. The conference scheduler has been great, I love the ISTE 2013 Mobile App for my phone, and there’s a Newcomer group on the ISTE Conference Ning. It’s been exciting to follow the conversations from people preparing to come from all over the world. I can’t wait!
